Hooked Gamers Far Cry 2 Preview

The guys over at Hooked Gamers have posted up a rather entertaining review of Far Cry 2. Don't miss it!

When the original Far Cry came out, it took the gaming world by storm. While everyone had been looking forward to the upcoming offerings from First Person Shooter power houses id Software and Epic Games, newcomer Crytek slipped in a milestone title. With Far Cry, this small German developer delivered a graphical marvel that neither of those other two companies could rival at the time. The huge open areas and lush island setting were something never before seen on any gaming platform. The game produced most of its splendor without hiccups even on PCs that went through life with less than top specs. It had great gameplay to boot and took the sales charts by storm. Soon Crytek was on everyone's lips.

As is so often the case, publisher Ubisoft turned the Far Cry franchise into a cash cow. The list of lackluster spinoffs includes Far Cry: Instincts and Far Cry: Vengeance. While Instincts is a decent offering, I would not recommend anyone to pick up Vengeance. Ubisoft and Crytek parted ways after the latter was bought up by EA. This did not spell the end of Far Cry however. Ubisoft Montreal (of Assassins Creed fame) is currently finishing up Far Cry 2 for its release later this year. We were fortunate to spend some time with the game last week in Leipzig. You can read our findings below.

Upon entering the game, we found ourselves wandering through the African Wild. Contrary to it...

Far Cry 3: Not Out of Africa

Videogaming247 reports on plans for a third installment in the Far Cry series, even as Ubisoft finishes up work on Far Cry 2.

Third Far Cry game confirmed, dev team has "commitment to the African setting"

Speaking at Games Convention last week, Far Cry 2 narrative chap Patrick Redding confirmed Ubi Montreal is at the "preliminary stages" with the "next game" in the Far Cry series, and that the team now has a "commitment to the African setting."

"For us Africa still has a huge amount of promise," Redding told VG247 at the German event when asked specifically if further Far Cry products will be set in Africa.

"There are still things we want to do with the African setting, and I think it's safe to say we'll continue to explore it.

"That said, we might find something new and compelling about the Antarctic setting that wants us to make the next game there, but honestly, we're still at the preliminary stages."

Redding said that the team has "made a commitment to the African setting" earlier on in a demo of Far Cry 2.

He added that the FC2 engine is flexible enough to allow them to makes games in any locale, but that an extension of the African setting in further games is likely to "save time."

"If we wanted to make the next game set in the... forest of South America, we could do it," he said.

"But I think to save time, for us, one of the reasons we chose to use the African setting is because we felt that in order to retain the Far Cry brand value, of an exotic, dangerous environment, a p...

1Up Far Cry 2 GC 2008 Preview

Check out this 1Up Preview as well as this cool new screenshot.

When Far Cry developer Crytek signed a deal with Electronic Arts to make Crysis, Ubisoft handed the Far Cry license to an internal development team at its Montreal studio, led by Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory creative director Clint Hocking. As a result, Far Cry 2 looks to be one of the least "fake" shooters around -- instead of focusing on big scripted moments, the developers put their time into establishing a world where everything from the way trees sway in the wind to the way something blows up is accurately simulated in the game's world.

The game also puts a focus on the relationships your character develops over the course of the single-player campaign, allowing you to choose which characters you want to befriend and join on missions. Unlike other games, however, if one of your allies dies in a mission (which may or may not happen, again tying in to the realistic-simulation idea), he or she is dead, and you won't see him or her in the rest of the game.

Ubisoft's big push for the show was the reveal of the multiplayer map editor, which will be included with the game and allow players to create maps, share them online, let users vote for them, and so on. While I didn't get a chance to test it out, it looks well rounded -- you can add different types of vegetation and land textures, objects that remain suspended in the air, weather effects that make your trees sway more or less violently, lakes, and such. A meter sits on the screen to show how much content you can include without breaking the framerate, and you can jump into your map and ru...
